K. Yamaya & Contemporary Sound Orchestra – Tapestry Koto & The Occident Hillside LP (1976)

This mind bending LP is also part of the “Tapestry Koto” series on the association between traditional and contemporary. Here the Koto, the harp-like instrument is played by living Japanese National Treasure Toshiko Yonekawa among other top ranked musicians. The rest is arranged by jazz composer Kiyoshi Yamaya. Traditional songs perfectly mixed with jazz and funk, as an introduction of Japanese music for the occident. As the other LPs of the series, this release is super hard to locate in any condition and never reissued before unlike other K. Yamaya LPs (“Ryukyu”, “Tsugaru/Osorezan”, the Shakuhachi series…). Japanese rare grooves at their finest.
